THE BRITISH SHORTHAIR

All You Need To Know About

British Shorthairs

Activity Level:

After their kitten stage, British Shorthair cats are generally quite calm and gentle. Occasionally, they will have a short burst of energy - we call it a sugar rush, or moon madness - where they will bolt around, ambushing other cats, and leap at anything that looks interesting.

Temperament:

British Short-hairs are gentle and loving towards every member in the household and love children. They generally don’t like to be picked up because of their big size and are not lap cats. They are quiet and undemanding but will tell you when they need something. British Short-hairs are generally soft-pawed as well.

Hypoallergenic?

British Short-hairs are also a hypoallergenic replacement which means that they are not completely hypoallergenic but people who are allergic to cats don’t react as much as they would to a regular domestic cat. British Short-hairs need to be groomed once or twice a week to prevent matting.

Average Litter Size:

The average litter size for the British Shorthair cat is around 3-5 kittens per litter which is medium sized.

Life Span

The life span of a British Shorthair cat is relatively long for a cat. It is around 14-20 years if well cared for. This is due to the lack of extreme features such as a pansy faced Persian or the wedge faced Siamese. The British Shorthair has a relatively round face with a shorter nose than that of a Siamese or Oriental but longer than that of a Persian or Himalayan.
